An Introduction To Windows 11 Partitioning Methods, Including Key Points For Using Disk Management And Third-party Software

When they get a new computer, or when they realize that the hard drive space is not enough, many friends have the idea of partitioning the hard drive. For example, dividing a physical hard drive into drive C, drive D, and drive E. In this way, installing the system, storing data, and placing games will not interfere with each other.
Carrying out this operation in Windows 11 is actually not complicated. There are two main practical methods: one is the disk management tool carried by the system itself, and the other is using third-party partition software.
No matter which one you choose, be sure to back up important files before proceeding, just in case.
Below I will break down these two methods step by step to ensure that you can do it yourself after reading this.
Preparation: Don’t be lazy when backing up your data
Regardless of whether you use the tools provided by the system itself or third-party software, as long as you partition the mobile hard disk, there will be a risk of data loss.
Especially when compressing the C drive, deleting partitions, and formatting operations, if you click the wrong button or there is a power outage in the middle, those photos, documents, and work materials may never be recovered.
So, the first step, and the most critical step, is to copy those files of important significance to the mobile hard disk, or to a USB flash drive, or to a cloud disk.
The "Desktop" folder placed in the system disk, as well as the "Downloads" folder, and the "Documents" folder should not be forgotten to check.
Spending ten minutes to back up will give you peace of mind.
Method 1: Use the disk management tool to compress the C drive and create a new partition.
In Windows 11, disk management is a built-in function, which is suitable for basic partition operations.
press Win+X key and select "Disk Management" to open it.
Find your system disk in the bottom graphics area, which is commonly known as the C drive, right-click it and select "Compress Volume".
The system will calculate the compressible space and a window will pop up after a while.
In the "Enter the amount of compressed space" column, fill in the size you want to release, in MB.
For example, if you want to allocate 100GB, fill in 102400.
It must be noted that sufficient remaining space needs to be reserved for the C drive. It is recommended to reserve at least 50GB to 100GB of free space. Otherwise, the system will freeze during subsequent updates or when running large software.
After clicking "Compress", a black bar will appear on the disk marked as "unallocated" space.
Create a new simple volume and format it
Right-click on the "Unallocated" space just created, select "New Simple Volume", then follow the wizard and click "Next".
If you want to specify the size of the new partition, if you plan to set this entire unallocated space into a partition called the D drive, then just use the default all selections.

Then assign a drive letter, such as D or E, and then take the next step.
You can choose NTFS as the file system, give the volume a name, such as "Software" or "Data", check "Perform Quick Format", and finally click "Finish".
Wait a few seconds and the new partition will appear in "This PC".
To delete a partition, you need to right-click the partition and select the "Delete Volume" option. However, be aware that this operation will clear all data in the partition.
The same goes for formatting, which will clear the data, so be sure to confirm before operating.
Method 2: Third-party software is more flexible (suitable for extending C drive)
If the space of the C drive is getting smaller and smaller, and you want to allocate some space from the D drive to the C drive, the disk management tool has no way to deal with it at this time. The reason is that it stipulates that the unallocated space must be close to the right side of the C drive.
It is recommended to use AOMEI Partition Assistant, DiskGenius, and free third-party software such as EaseUS Partition Master.
After downloading and installing, open it and the main interface will clearly list all disks and partitions.
For example, if you want to expand the C drive, first make sure there is unallocated space on the right side of the C drive.
If it does not exist, you can divide it from the adjacent D drive: after entering, right-click the D drive, select "Allocate Free Space" or "Resize/Move", set the size to be allocated to the C drive in the pop-up window, and then select allocate to the C drive.
After the operation planning is properly completed, remember to click "Apply" or "Execute" in the upper left corner of the software, so that the software will give a prompt telling you that you need to restart the computer.
During the restart process, the software will automatically adjust the partition before Windows starts, which is extremely convenient.
Key considerations and common misunderstandings
Whether it is MBR disk format or GPT disk format, for modern computers with Windows 11, it is basically GPT format. There is no limit on the number of primary partitions, so there is no need to worry about too many partitions.
However, if the old computer uses MBR format, it can only have up to 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions plus 1 extended partition.
When compressing the C drive, do not be overly greedy, because if the remaining space of the system disk is too small, it will cause the computer to run slowly, and even make it impossible to update. This is a situation that needs to be paid attention to.
In addition, please do not clear or format partitions marked with "System", "Boot", and "EFI", otherwise the computer will not be able to boot.
Make a backup before all operations. Make sure the laptop is plugged in and the desktop is not powered off during operation.
If you just want to create a partition, delete a partition, format a partition, or compress the C drive to separate the D drive, the disk management tool provided by Windows 11 alone is enough.
If you want to adjust the partition size without loss, divide the space of D drive to C drive, or move the partition location, then you need to install a third-party partitioning software, which will make the operation more flexible.
No matter which method you use, backup always comes first.
Think more before taking action, confirm it and click OK, and there will basically be no problems.
