Is There Only C Drive After Installing The System? Two Steps To Teach You Easy Partition Management
After many friends reinstalled the system on their computers, they found that there was only a lonely C drive left in the hard drive. Looking at hundreds of gigabytes or even tens of gigabytes of space all crowded together, I still feel uneasy – if there is a problem with the system one day, all the files will be gone when reinstalling. In fact, partitioning the hard disk after reinstalling the system can not only make file management clearer, but also improve the efficiency of the system to a certain extent. Just today I will share two of the most practical partitioning methods, both of which I have actually used, to ensure that you can succeed if you follow them.
Don’t be sloppy in preparation, put data backup first
No matter what partitioning method is used, the most critical step before starting is to back up important data. Although the partition operation itself will not directly delete files, the risk of data loss still exists if there is a power outage, misoperation, or the hard disk itself has bad sectors. You can copy important documents, photos, and videos to a mobile hard drive or upload them to a network drive. In addition, it is recommended to record the size of the currently used space on the C drive, so that you will have a better idea when planning a new partition. To ensure that the computer is connected to the power supply, it is best to plug in the charger for the laptop, and do not force shutdown during the entire operation.
Method 1: Windows comes with disk management, simple and reliable
For most ordinary users, the disk management tool that comes with the Windows system fully meets the needs of use, and there is no need to install additional software. The way to open it is quite simple. Press the Win + After entering the interface, you will see the partition status of the hard disk. The rightmost one is generally the C drive with the largest space. Right-click the C drive and select "Shrink Volume". At this time, the system will calculate the amount of space that can be released. In the column "Enter the amount of shrinkage space", fill in the size you want to allocate. The unit is MB. If you want to allocate 100GB, fill in 102400. After filling in, click "Shrink" and wait for a moment. An area with "Unallocated" status will appear behind the C drive. Then right-click on this block of unallocated space, select "New Simple Volume", and then follow the wizard one by one. When assigning a drive letter, you can select the D drive, select NTFS for the file system, and create a name for the volume label such as "Software" or "Data". Finally, click Finish and the new partition will be created. If the new partition appears unformatted, right-click it and select the "Format" option to quickly format it by maintaining the default settings.
Method 2: EaseUS Partition Master, more flexible functions
If you find that the built-in tools lack intuitive operation, or you have more detailed partitioning requirements, such as transferring part of the space of one partition to another, then third-party software will be more convenient. Here we take EaseUS Partition Master Professional as an example. After installing and opening the software, the main interface will clearly list all hard drives and partitions. Select the partition to free up space as the first step. Generally speaking, this partition is the C drive, and then click "Allocate Space" in the left function bar. In the pop-up window, you can choose to allocate the unused space of the C drive to other existing partitions on the same hard drive, or directly use the unused space to create a new partition. Drag the slider or enter the corresponding value directly to determine the size of the target partition. This operation will not take effect immediately, but will appear in the to-be-executed task list in the lower left corner. After you have set all the adjustments, click the "Perform X Actions" button in the upper left corner, then confirm "Apply" and the software will start processing. A progress bar will be displayed from beginning to end. Just wait for the completion and the computer will be able to refresh the partition status on its own. Compared with disk management, the most prominent benefit of this type of software is that it can allocate space as you wish, and there is a preview before operation, so errors are less likely to occur.

Pay attention to zoning planning, focus on practicality and don’t be greedy for too much

Many friends are easily entangled when it comes to zoning. How many zones should be divided and how large each zone should be. In fact, there is no fixed standard, it mainly depends on your usage habits and hard disk size. In case of a 512GB solid-state drive, it is recommended to reserve 100GB to 120GB on the C drive to install the system and commonly used software. The remaining space can be divided into a D drive to store games and work files, or it can be divided into D drive and E drive, one for software installation packages and the other for personal data. If the hard drive is a large hard drive with a capacity of 1TB, then the C drive can be given 150GB to 200GB, and the rest can be divided into two or three areas according to needs. It should be noted that many software and games are currently quite large in size. It is best to manually select the installation path of the software or game to a non-system disk. In this way, even if the system is reinstalled in the future, these software and games do not need to be downloaded again, and many settings can be retained. In addition, the more partitions, the better. Three to four partitions are enough to meet daily management needs. Too many partitions may easily lead to insufficient space in a certain partition.
Be aware of the problems you may encounter after partitioning in advance
After the partition operation is completed, occasionally the new partition cannot be seen in "This PC". This is usually caused by forgetting to assign a drive letter or not formatting. You can return to the Disk Management tool, right-click the partition, select "Change Drive Letter and Path" to assign a drive letter to it, and then format it again to display it normally. Another situation is that when the C drive shrinks, it will give a reminder that the shrinkable space is very small. This is often because there are system files in the C drive that cannot be moved or hibernation files occupying the end space. You can try to shut down the system from hibernation first, or shrink in safe mode. If there is really no other way, it will be more flexible to use third-party software like EaseUS Partition Master to make adjustments. It can directly move the positions of these files to free up space.
Partitioning the hard drive after reinstalling the system is actually an act of reasonable planning for the computer, so that the system and files can be placed in their appropriate locations. The built-in tool is convenient and fast, suitable for simply dividing an area; the third-party software has stronger functions and can handle more complex space adjustment situations. No matter which method you choose, remember to make a backup in advance. Don't be anxious during the operation. Follow the steps step by step and there will be no problems. I hope this sharing can help you achieve partitioning easily and make your computer more convenient to use.
